Liberty High School is located in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania and was opened in 1923 as Bethlehem High School. It is located on Linden Street in the heart of Bethlehem and has approximately 2,800 students. Liberty is one of two high schools in Bethlehem, the other being Freedom High School which opened in 1967 and serves primarily Bethlehem Township and portions of South Bethlehem. Liberty has a long tradition of excellence in athletics and boasts notable alumni like Chuck Bednarik (Philadelphia Eagles) and Mike Hartenstine (Chicago Bears).
The football team at Liberty competes in the Lehigh Valley Conference which took the place of the old East Penn Conference. A traditional rivalry exists between Liberty, Freedom and Bethlehem Catholic for the Christmas City Championship but Liberty also compete against the Allentown schools (Allen, Dieruff and Central Catholic), Easton, Emmaus, Northampton, Nazareth, and Parkland.
In recent years Liberty has become a AAAA powerhouse, thanks largely to the leadership of Coach Tim Moncman who came to Liberty after coaching at Southern Lehigh High School and graduate assistant positions at Lehigh University and Albany University. Ironically Moncman attended high school at Freedom (Liberty's close rival) and then went on to play at Lafayette College in Easton.
Moncman built a solid program at Liberty that culminated in the 2005 run to the state championship. Players such as Andres Morales (Rutgers), Rich Jarnigan (Delaware) and Andrew Lee (Towson) formed the backbone of a team that surprised many by defeating North Penn in the semi final. Liberty ultimately lost the final game in Hershey to McKeesport but the seeds of success had been sewn. 2006 was a season full of optimism and Liberty won the Lehigh Valley Conference and progressed to the semi final where they played a strong Pennsbury team. In one of the most talked about high school games in a very long time, Liberty defeated Pennsbury in the 4th overtime period and once again progressed to the state final game at Hershey. However, the thousands of Liberty fans who snaked their way to Hershey along I-78 were once again disappointed as Liberty lost to a strong Upper St. Clair team.
2007 has been another successful year for Moncman and the Canes as they went 9-1 in regular season play and now enter the play offs with a first round game against East Stroudsburg South. The anticipated match up with 10-0 Parkland for the LVC crown is far from a for gone conclusion and Liberty have another potential match up with Easton in the next round if they can overcome Hazleton. Fans are buzzing about the recent play of Joey Orlando who has caught some unbelievable catches from Anthony Gonzalez. Backed up by Akheem Smith and Brandon Brader on the running game and Brendan Beal on defense, the Canes are facing a potential 3rd consecutive appearance at Hershey. |
